Don’t forget to check out the new summer workshops on the Workshops Tab!
Now in it’s second year ArtZone started out as a concept to create an art retreat at Sun Peaks by local resident and artist Lorel Sternig. A professional artist, Sternig has attended art and culture activities and workshops at other resort areas. “One has only to look at other tourist destinations to realize that people are looking for a well rounded experience and there is much value in bringing art to a community. Giving locals and tourists the opportunity to participate in art in a very personal way is an amazing concept that has proven very successful in such places as Metchosin, Saltspring Islands, Whistler, etc., so I couldn’t imagine why it wouldn’t work at Sun Peaks”, says Sternig.
With initial and ongoing community support, the help and generosity of a number local businesses and individuals, the ArtZone council, studio and gallery were created.
Following on from the inaugural year, summer 2013 offers two art workshops, Wednesday ‘open studio’ sessions to support a meeting place to work on art projects, and a regular monthly meeting. With a growing membership future events planned include: Art Workshops, Wine Label Competition, Writers’ Workshop, Children’s activities.
All projected projects need a team of volunteers to ensure their success. If you would like to assist with any of them please contact the Chair, Bruce Mitchell at email@example.com
“The formation and growth of ArtZone, a non-profit society promoting arts and culture in the Sun Peaks region, is a clear indicator of the progressive and forward thinking qualities of the community of Sun Peaks. Where outdoor pursuits in a pristine environment may once have been the focus, we are seeing a dynamic and diverse community develop where nature, sport, education, the arts and culture flourish together and create a wonderful synergy unique to the Sun Peaks experience.” -Bruce Mitchell
