David Langevin - Painting Workshop

For the one-day workshop, we will spend the day working on painting water in a landscape. Water scenes can be challenging, and exciting if you can get them right. Calm transparent water or raging waterfalls both have their different feel, and appeal, and their own challenges for the painter. We will use the techniques David is well known for (glazes, veils, and layering techniques), and that he teaches in his workshop to create one of these paintings. David will do lots of demonstrating and coaching along the way. It will be a fun and exciting experience and you will learn a lot that you can apply to your own art, no matter your style.

Supplies you will need:

  • Acrylic paint, heavy body and fluid if you have it

  • Brushes, rags, water container, palette

  • Two medium sized canvases or canvas boards, approx. 16x20

  • Gloss medium, or Golden GAC 500

  • If you have it - Retarder or Golden Glazing Liquid

Giving Tuesday

Thank you to Tourism Sun Peaks for inviting us to participate in their initiative to raise money for Sun Peaks Non-Profit organizations.

ArtZone to this point has been a self-funded organization, hosting events like the Sun Peaks Film Festival, facilitating workshops in guitar playing, fibre arts, and painting, providing art kits to children at the Sunday Markets, and selling our art to benefit our local artists and expose the community to the vast variety of local art.

We appreciate the support of the businesses who host our exhibitions, Sun Peaks Resort, Sun Peaks Grand Hotel, Tourism Sun Peaks, Sotheby’s Real Estate, and Vertical Cafe.

This summer we used our funds to place an interactive art installation in the Village of a painted piano. It was a huge success with comments from people from all over the world enjoying “Tickle Me Please”.

The cost and availability of appropriate art space is very limited in the Village and we continue to seek a solution to the availability and cost of a “home” for ArtZone. Your funds will assist us in paying for space to provide arts activities in the Village, the cost for these has escalated dramatically since Covid.

If you enjoy the addition of arts and culture to the Village, we would appreciate your donations. Thank you.

Film-makers Contest

Hey Go-Pro crowd!! Win $500 and a prize package from McSporties!

Here’s your chance to strut your stuff and put together a film, winner and runners-up to be screened at the Sun Peaks Film Festival Local’s Night - January 12.

Here are the parameters:
Focus on story:
Capture our interest with a unique take on someone, or something from the local environment.
Pace the story to keep us watching and make sure to deliver at the end.
Showcase our wonderful slice of paradise that we live amongst.

Technical:

Camera gear is not important but providing a quality, easy to watch edit is crucial.
Use your phone, GoPro, DSLR/Mirrorless or Cine camera, but whatever equipment you use, make sure to use it to focus on the STORY.

Helpful tips:

Scripting the story on paper in bullet points or short notes can be incredibly helpful in keeping you on track with your project.

Storyboarding scenes may be better for visual learners.
Collaborating with other creatives can lighten the load and broaden the genius (idea) pool.

Start sooner than later to allow reviews of the final piece and any (probable) amendments needed.

Can you put old footage already collected to use?

DONE is better than PERFECT. ENTRY DEADLINE JANUARY 6, 2023

Upload your submission to this folder, and fill out the form below OR fill out the form below with the URL location of your submission prior to the January 6 - midnight deadline.

CANCELLED - Film-making Workshop with Kyle James

Got a bunch of videos from the summer or last ski season

you haven’t done anything with??

This 3-part course will set you up with all the skills, knowledge, and inspiration to go out there and start creating your own short films. The course caters to all skill levels with fascinating nuggets of information for everyone from beginner to experienced.

  • Monday, November 7 - 5:00 - 7:00 pm

  • Tuesday, November 8 - 5:00 - 7:00 pm

  • Friday, November 11 - 5:00 - 7:00 pm

Note: High-end equipment is not essential. It is entirely possible to make a gripping film using only the camera on your phone.

The course is made up of 3 sessions that neatly connect to deliver a complete run-through/overview of making a short film:

SESSION 1/3

Learn techniques and skills to improve your filmmaking. Held as an interactive workshop we will float and discuss ideas on filmmaking and any specific areas of the process. In this session we will lay the foundation of storyboarding and ‘scripting’ your film idea.

SESSION 2/3

Put those techniques, skills and other nuggets from SESSION 1 into practice with a hands-on filming session. This is where you take your film from the scripting pages to the camera. You will be guided through each step of the process as well as being encouraged to embrace your creative side to collect footage for SESSION 3.

SESSION 3/3

In the final session of the course we will cover your film footage as edited by you. Edits beforehand are strongly encouraged to get the most out of the session. We will dissect your short film with feedback and constructive criticism where appropriate. A neat part about SESSION 3 is that I can pass on editing tips and tricks to speed up the post-processing part of filmmaking - aiming to take away the dread of editing software and piecing the puzzle together.

Cost: $140 for the 3 part course

ArtZone strives to be an inclusive and equitable organization where we respect and value diverse life experiences and heritages and ensure that all voices are valued and heard.

Group Guitar Lessons with the Legend - Kyle James!

Group Guitar Lessons with the Legend - Kyle James!

Weekly July 5 - 26, 2022 - maximum of 5 students per session

Cost: $140 for 4 sessions

Hi, my name is Kyle and I am your new guitar teacher. I’ve been playing guitar for close to 20  years. I have played in a touring band in which I wrote and performed all of our songs, live and in-studio. Along the way, I have taught people to master their guitar or get past a plateau in their playing.

The lessons on offer are split into 3 categories:

‘New-To’ - (4:00 - 4:45) exactly as it says on the tin - never played guitar before or just started putting fingers onto fretboard but want to start or start improving.

These lessons will familiarize you with the guitar and your new best friend, the fretboard.  Lessons at this level will also get your hands moving to make chord shapes and play single notes as well as introduce you to strumming patterns.

‘Beginner’ - (5:00 - 5:45) you have a basic grasp of some chords or notes, maybe they sound a little tinny or rattle when you play.

These lessons will focus on improving your playing ability for chords, notes, riffs, and basic solos. Here we will encourage smooth chord changes, clean notes, and introduce you to some  scales to help with the ripping solos you’re about to play (except here we make it more exciting  than it sounds to learn scales)

‘Intermediate’ (6:00 - 6:45)

At this level, you are already playing along to some songs you like and can change chords and play notes relatively cleanly.

These lessons refine your knowledge and ability to play lead over chords and understand the song structure. We will also build your speed on notes and chords. Another focus at this level is picking - we’ll explore all the cool ways you can use your pick (or fingers) to create rhythm and hooks on the guitar.

I’m proud to be partnering with ArtZone to bring these lessons to you and hope you will enjoy the journey to guitar legend. See ya in class!
